LaCie? Never Again!
I am almost positive that all of you people know what LaCie is, however; in the case that you don’t, they make external hard drives and monitors. Sure their monitors are a bit on the pricey side but, let’s face it they are some of the best when it comes to color reproduction. For a long time I thought their hard drives were also, really quite solid. They have never failed me (I am incredibly safe with all my external hd’s) and I have tooted them to all my friends, family and clients for some time now. However, I just had a bit of trouble on a raid - 0, 2TB Big Disk. What occurred was my power board (the board that is in the enclosure that manages, usb, fw, and spinning up the hd’s when you plug it in) failed on me. It was actually quite a boring failure; the drive simply would not turn on and the light on the power supply would just blink.
What did I do you might ask? Well since it was well within warranty I gave LaCie a call to see what they could do. Here is where the shit hits the fan. They are willing to send me a new power supply but I know this is not the problem (I have tried several) or they are willing to take the external enclosure in and test it out. If they do bring it in, they will wipe the drives and fix the power board but they HAVE to completely format the drives (unacceptable). OK, so you might think…just take the drives out and send them the empty enclosure, well sir, thank you, but this would void the warranty. Basically LaCie has charged me with figuring out a way to get my information off the drives, either through Drive Savers (great guys but expensive) or by my own means…thanks? I am also very willing to pay them real money (the kind of money that they would not get if I sent the enclosure in under warranty) for the power board that they make! To make a long story short…simply avoid LaCie, I am and will make a positive point to move all of mine and my client’s important information onto Drobo’s. I will also never buy another LaCie product for the rest of my life. Which is actually a super sad thing because a lot of their stuff I really like and salute them for melding form and function. My 02 cents: Avoid LaCie.Braden Douglass
